The ancient Mesopotamians left many contributions and legacies behind before their civilization had started to fade away. The first empire is the Akkadian Empire. They left behind a type of writing called cuneiform. The cuneiforms are similar to the alphabet that we use to communicate with others as well. The Akkadians were also well known for the relief stones that they made for people. Relief stones are stone tablets that are made to become a memorial for certain people like military leaders. The Mesopotamians actually made one to celebrate a victory or a military event. Another important contribution that was made was the wheel. This helped people make things that can help them transport goods faster.
Next is the babylonian empire. The contributions that they were known for was the code of written laws, created by Hammurabi himself in 1750 B.C.E. These written laws helped everybody to stay ordered. The laws were expected to be followed by everybody who lived in this empire, without exception. These laws covered a wide variety of subjects including, trade, payment for work, marriage, divorce, etc. This was also the center of most trades.
Now there are the Assyrians. These people were very warlike in the way that they went about things. The contributions that they are known for is making many, many new types of weapons that they could use for wars. The used these weapons in siege warfare, which the assyrians were good at. Siege warfare is when an enemy camps outside and attacks them over and over until that city or empire has finally fallen. The assyrians found new ways to do this, like using battering rams, which were used to make wholes in a wall. Another strategy they came up with was using things like moveable towers to get over walls instead of using the battering rams. Finally, there is the Neo-Babylonians. They made mud walls to protect themselves from the enemy attack so that they could prepare for the fight themselves. Next is the hanging garden. These gardens were put inside the palaces for design purposes. Lastly, they created the sundial, which was a type of clock that they invented. This clock used the sun to help tell what time of the day it was by using the sunlight!
